What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator, (muscle relaxing agent) used to reduce and eliminate facial lines of expression.  The injection of Botox is both a science and an art, when choosing a physician for your Botox treatment we suggest you consider the credentials of the injector as top priority.  At River Region Facial Plastics we are board certified in the face, head and neck highly qualified to give you safe and beautifying results. At River Region Facial Plastics we combine years of experience in providing advanced Botox treatments to our patients.

Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by repetitive facial expressions, such as grimacing, squinting and smiling. These repetitive movements cause our faces to repeatedly contract; while as we age, the elasticity in our skin decreases. This results in lines and wrinkles appearing on our faces, even at rest. For both men and women, the typical areas where lines and wrinkles appear first are worry lines across the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows and Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes.

Botox is safe, effective and temporary.  In 2013, 3,766,148 neuromodulator injections were given safely in the United States alone.  The body will metabolize the toxin and movement will return however with continued use of the product a noticeable reduction in existing wrinkles will happen.  We recommend retreating with Botox every 4 to 6 months. Botox reduces the activity in the muscles, which prevents the skin from wrinkling and creasing. The result of Botox is thereforea smoothing affect. Botox, when administered correctly, does not paralyze the facial muscles or keep patients from expressing themselves. Botox simply softens and rebalances facial movements that have become habitual and repetitive over the years. This results in a more youthful, relaxed and vibrant appearance.

Possible side effects and complications include but are not limited to:

·      Potential allergic reaction. As with any product, allergies can develop during or after injection. These are rare, but could be severe (i.e. respiratory problems, flu-like symptoms, nausea, or dizziness)

·      Red or pink bumps at the injection sites are common. These usually last hours, but may last up to a few days.

·      Other reactions include swelling, rash, headaches, local numbness, pain, bruising, and possibly infections and/or scarring.

·      Asymmetry in appearance may occur. This can often be corrected with a touch up injection, but could persist for weeks or months.

·      If injected near the eyes, drooping of the eyelid can occur (ptosis). This is rare. If it occurs, it is usually temporary, but could be permanent.

Precautions and contraindications:

·      Botulinum toxin is not recommended for patients with severe allergies or anaphylaxis.

·      The risk of bruising or bleeding may be increased by medications which thin the blood (i.e. aspirin, Plavix (clopidogrel), Coumadin (warfarin),Vitamin E, fish oil, and certain herbs (Ginkgo biloba, St. John’s Wart).

·      The safety of botulinum toxin in pregnant or breast-feeding women has not been established, and is therefore not recommended for these women. It should not be used in women who are actively trying to become pregnant.

·      Patients with neurologic diseases including myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, Lambert-Eaton Syndrome, ALS, or Parkinson’s should not receive botulinum toxin injections
